伏見稲荷大社 - Fushimi Inari Shrine and Tofukuji Temple – 東福寺

Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏見稲荷大) –

A shinto shrine in Kyoto, Inari is famous for its thousands of tori gates.

Fushimi Inari is also the most important of several shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice.  Because foxes were thought to be sacred messengers, many statues of them can be seen throughout the area.

The mountain trails lead to the top of Mount Inari, which stands 233 meters tall.  Also, don’t forget to try Inari Zushi, specially seasoned rice with a sweet tofu skin.

Tofukuji Temple (東福寺) –

This Zen Buddhist temple was founded in 1236.  It is most well-known for its autumn colors.

Rock gardens can be seen surrounding the main building on all sides, which is rare.

I forgot my camera for the day but I took advantage of all the beautiful scenery anyway.  If you go, it’s a great place to bring a camera.
