New Phrases: Part I (1 – 10)

Remember that a “す” (“su”) at the end of a word or phrase is pronounced as a single “s”.

1.  おはようございます。 - o.ha.yo.u go.sa.i.ma.su – Good Morning. (formal)

2.  おはよう。 - o.ha.yo.u – Good Morning.

3.  こんにちは。 - ko.ni.chi.wa* – Good Afternoon.

4.  こんばんは。 - ko.n.ba.n.wa* – Good Evening.

*Note: Here “は” is pronounced “wa” not its usual “ha”.  This is also the case when “は” is used as a subject marker in sentances.

5.  じゃあ、また。 - jyā. ma.ta. – See ya.

6.  しつれいします。 - shi.tsu.re.i.shi.ma.su – Excuse me; Pardon me.

7.  さようなら。 - sa.yo.u.na.ra – Goodbye.

8.  おやすみなさい。 - o.ya.su.mi.na.sa.i – Have a good night; Sleep well.

9.  おだいじに。 - o.da.i.ji.ni – Get well (better) soon.

10.  ありがとうございます。 - a.ri.ga.to.u.go.za.i.ma.su – Thank you. (formal)
